Fleurieu Living Magazine interns announced
Year 12 students Micaela Radue and Shaye Tame have been named co-winners of the annual Fleurieu Living Magazine internship.
The internship program established by Fleurieu Living Magazine is designed to introduce emerging creatives to the business of commercial photography and magazine production.
Past interns have included Tatachilla alumni Jack Brown (2023), Tom Terry (2022), Joel Maung (2021) and Loki Hall (2020).
Publishing Editor and Managing Director of Fleurieu Living Magazine, Petra de Mooy, said that – just as in past years – this year’s interns were chosen on the basis of a written proposal and photographic portfolio.
“Both Micaela and Shaye demonstrated very interesting approaches to lighting and composition, which is what we look for,” says Petra.
“Micaela’s style is very journalistic, while Shaye’s is very conceptual.
“Our internship program will give both Micaela and Shaye the opportunity to gain a broad understanding of publishing, including the magazine’s online application and operations, and to grasp the all-important design process.
“Interns who work alongside us get a sense of what we look for in photography and have the chance to do their own location photography for the magazine.
“Micaela and Shaye will work at Fleurieu Living Magazine one day per week over a five-week period.
“The internship is part of the special relationship we have with Tatachilla, as while we occasionally offer internships to students at other schools and universities, the only formalised annual internship program we have is with the college.
“We can’t wait to work with Micaela and Shaye and see what insights and talents they bring to the magazine.”
Images from Micaela and Shaye’s portfolios were recently featured in the Year 12 Photographic Exhibition at Tatachilla Lutheran College in September this year.
Opening night of the exhibition saw Stacey Takawira take home the 2024 Principal’s Choice Award for her photograph of a sunrise, which featured in her larger body of work entitled “From Dusk till Dawn”.
Shaye Tame was later announced as the winner of the 2024 People’s Choice Award for his series of compositions collectively entitled, “Pillars of Solitude”.
Off camera with Micaela Radue: Fleurieu Living Magazine co-intern
Micaela’s photographic work for the 2024 Year 12 Photographic Exhibition was inspired by her love of music and the deeply atmospheric experience of attending live gigs.
“The lights and the sound at live gigs encapsulate you,” says Micaela.
“I wanted my photos to capture the moment you get lost in the music.
“I also wanted to reveal the music-making process and highlight the hours of practice that take place in the lead-up up to a performance.
“I was quite inspired by the work of famous rock ‘n’ roll portraitists like Gered Mankowitz, whose iconic images of The Rolling Stones, Jimi Hendrix, Marianne Faithfull and Kate Bush helped immortalise these artists and establish a really honest, unelaborate, black and white style.”
Some of the biggest lessons that Micaela has learned during her artistic journey include the fact that photography takes considerable time and patience, and that it is always worth going back and getting the shot you really want rather than just settling for something you aren't particularly proud of.
Micaela also says that she has learned that you can uncover amazing photographic moments in the most unexpected places, and that it is important to keep an eye out for all the small but beautiful exchanges between people.
“Nothing can capture a moment in time like a camera,” Micaela says.
“A laugh or a smile can be revisited and relived because of a camera.
“There is no other device in the world that allows us to truly freeze time the way a camera does and I think that this makes the camera almost magical.
“I'm excited about the Fleurieu Living Magazine internship because I'm keen to grow my photography skills, apply these in a live workplace setting and experience the magazine publishing process.”
Micaela will commence her co-internship at Fleurieu Living Magazine in March 2025.
