Barista Matt aces SACE
Matt Heath is one of 40 high-achieving South Australian students who have been awarded Governor of South Australia Commendations.
His achievement was profiled in the Year 12 merit liftout of The Advertiser on 6 January 2024.
The Governor of South Australia Commendations recognise excellence in Year 12 SACE subjects and students' personal achievements inside and outside of the school community.
Matt Heath has earned his Commendation award for Excellence in Modified SACE.
Modified SACE subjects are offered to students with impairments in intellectual or behavioural functioning, enabling them to undertake rich and rewarding learning that meets their specific needs and interests.
Matt lives with Down Syndrome – a fact of which he is particularly proud – and is a passionate espresso artist, cook and video blogger.
He has spent the past year attending barista training, authoring his own book of tested recipes and producing a video of his Year 12 experiences.
He has also successfully completed five modified SACE subjects including English, Health and Wellbeing, Mathematics, Business Innovation and Research Project.
Matt’s persistence in the achievement of his goals and deep desire to remain in step with his peers has inspired his entire graduating cohort. His humour, perspective, resilience and courage has earned him the respect and admiration of the whole college community.
This year’s recipients of the Governor’s Commendation awards were selected by a panel comprising the Governor – Her Excellency the Honourable Frances Adamson AC – and representatives from the school sector, vocational education and training industry and the business world.
Matt is among more than 450 students who completed modified SACE subjects in 2023.
His award recognises his skill and passion for learning inside and outside of the classroom, as well as his creative thinking, dedication and contribution to his school and community.
Matt’s new dream is to find employment in the hospitality or retail sector and to that end is currently working with customised employment agency 4GR to secure work in his chosen field.
Never one to sit on the sidelines, Matt has already lined up a work experience placement with a local retail provider and is undertaking life skills training as part of his ongoing commitment to living with increased independence.
The college community warmly congratulates Matt on his achievements and wishes him every success and happiness for his bright future.
Matt will receive his Commendation award at an official ceremony at Government House on 8 February 2024.
